UAE- Businessman on trial over bid to kill wife

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) A businessman allegedly threw his wife down from the balcony of a hotel apartment where he stayed in Al Rafaa, in an inebriated condition, a court heard on Wednesday. The 37-year-old Tajik national was charged with attempted murder in the Court of First Instance. He is also accused of consuming liquor. A policeman said the incident was reported in April. The defendant's Indian friend led them to his whereabouts which was near the hotel apartment. He was arrested. When interrogated, the accused denied that he carried and threw his wife down from the balcony. But he admitted that he beat her because he heard she was working as a prostitute with her parents' knowledge. He alleged that his wife jumped off the balcony fearing he would hurt her. The victim, a 18-year-old Tajik housewife, told the prosecutor that the accused had returned from his home country and rented an apartment. He told her to bring her daughter and all her belongings. She went to his apartment around 8am. She said he got mad when she asked him about his business and beat her on her head many times. She told him to stop because she was holding her toddler, who was crying. But he did not stop or did not tell her the reason for the beating. He took her mobile phone and smashed it so she would not call her parents. He called a Tajik woman on his mobile phone and put her on speaker. The wife heard the other woman telling him 'she deserves it because she was having relations with other men'. The wife asked the other woman why she was making those allegations. The other woman then told the accused to leave his wife and that she would get him a new woman to marry. He ended the call and then took off his clothes and urinated on her and on her baby. He carried her and threw her off the balcony. She fell down and lost consciousness. When she woke up, she was in a hospital. The wife's father, a 50-year-old Tajik businessman, said that he got a call from the defendant's friend around 2.20am telling him that his daughter had an accident and she was in hospital. He saw his daughter with blood, bruises and leg fracture. He knew that she was assaulted by the accused and was tossed off the balcony. His daughter underwent surgeries. The Indian watchman of the building said that on that day he heard the sound of a body hitting the ground with a strong impact. He saw the woman and knew she was staying in the hotel apartment. She whispered and signalled towards the apartment where she fell from saying that her daughter was up there. The watchman informed the receptionist to call the police. The defendant came and told him to call the ambulance. But the watchman did not see him later on.
