Jordan King reaffirms support for Syria peace envoy

(MENAFN- Jordan Times) His Majesty King Abdullah on Tuesday reaffirmed Jordan's support for the efforts of the UN and the Arab League to reach a peaceful solution for the Syrian crisis that preserves the unity of its land and people. During meetings with world leaders and international officials in New York on the sidelines of the 67th UN General Assembly, the King called on the international community to support UN-Arab League envoy to Syria Lakhdar Brahimi in his endeavours. His Majesty attended the opening session of the UN General Assembly meeting in New York, where US President Barack Obama spoke before world leaders. The UN General Assembly discussed world economic growth, sustainable development, international peacekeeping, supporting human rights and international law, and real coordination between international agencies for disarmament, crime prevention and counterterrorism. On the sidelines of the meeting, His Majesty received a number of heads of state and delegations, including French President Francois Hollande, Austrian President Heinz Fischer, Yemeni President Abed Rabbo Mansur Hadi, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle. The King also met separately with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and Brahimi and discussed the Syrian crisis and its effect on the future of the region, the developments in the Middle East peace process and the achievements of the Kingdom in terms of political reform, a Royal Court statement said. The Monarch voiced his concerns over the worsening situation in Syria and the rise in violence, which he said was reaching an unprecedented level of bloodshed and destruction. He warned of a grave escalation in the situation if an exit is not found soon. The 200,000 Syrian refugees that Jordan is hosting despite its scarce resources and the Kingdom's need for international support to maintain the level of services were featured strongly in the King's discussions. On the latest Mideast peace developments, the King pointed out the necessity for the international community to spare no effort to revive the negotiations between the Palestinians and the Israelis, meeting the Palestinians' legitimate demands for an independent state within the 1967 borders, living in peace with Israel. The King also strongly rejected the constant attempts by Israel to Judaise the Christian and Muslim religious legacy and history in Jerusalem, the statement said. The only alternative to peace is more tension, lack of security and an unknown future for the nations of the region, he warned. The King outlined the reforms Jordan is undertaking, which will be crowned with the election of a new Parliament later this year. During the meetings, the heads of state commended Jordan's reform endeavour and its efforts to revive the Middle East peace process. They also praised Jordan's humanitarian efforts to host Syrian refugees, stressing the importance of international community's support for the Kingdom to provide services for refugees. The leaders called on the international community to step up its role in reviving the peace process between the Palestinians and the Israelis, and resolve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh, King's Office Director Imad Fakhoury and Jordan's Permanent Representative to the UN HH Prince Zeid Bin Raad attended the meetings.
