Oman- TRA warning to unapproved iPhone 5 dealers

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) The Telecommunication Regulatory Authority (TRA) has issued warnings to dealers who sell iPhone 5 without 'type approval', a system to ensure that telecom equipment sold in Oman are in compliance with international standards. According to TRA, all telecom devices (not just limited to mobile handsets, but including wireless access points, radio base stations, switches, telephone sets, cordless devices) have to be 'type approved' before they are imported and sold in Oman.''A few registered telecom equipment dealers had applied to TRA for the approval to sell iPhone 5, and they got it on the same day. However, we have learnt that some dealers are selling it without the mandatory approval. Accordingly, we sent inspection teams to several markets in the city, and three dealers were found selling the phone without the approval,'' said Eng Mahmood al Zadjali, senior specialist and in charge of steering type approval and authorisation department, TRA. He said that their cases have been forwarded to the authority's legal unit. ''They face a fine of RO100 in addition to RO125 fee for getting the approval to sell iPhone 5.''A dealer whose company has been given a warning, said, ''No fine has been imposed yet, but a warning has been issued by the authority. I have paid RO125 to obtain the approval, which will be given in the next few days"
