(MENAFN - Jordan Times) Police were called in on Monday to quell a protest by Syrian refugees at the Zaatari Refugee Camp after they torched a tent and destroyed property, Agence France-Presse quoted a local relief organisation as saying.

"Around 1,000 refugees demonstrated in protest [against] their living conditions in the Zaatari camp," in the north near the border with Syria, said Zayed Hammad, head of Al Kitab and Sunna Society, which provides aid to tens of thousands of refugees.

"They said they want to go home. They destroyed offices of the Jordan Hashemite Charity Organisation, torched a tent and attacked a Moroccan field hospital," Hammad told AFP.

He said police "fired tear gas to break up the demonstration".

"They were some injuries" and ambulances rushed the wounded to hospital, he added.

Police were not immediately available for comment.

In late August, over 20 security officers were injured in riots by Syrian refugees, which followed a march by around 200 Syrians to protest against the camp's "poor conditions".

After the incident, Prime Minister Fayez Tarawneh said the government would repatriate Syrian refugees responsible for the riots to "where they came from".

The Zaatari Refugee Camp, located near Mafraq, 80km northeast of Amman, is home to some 30,000 Syrian refugees.

Jordan is currently hosting over 200,000 Syrians who have escaped the ongoing violence in their country.
