Oman- Musandam extends lead

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Musandam-Oman Sail extended its lead over the rest of the fleet going into Sunday during the fourth leg of the MOD70 European Tour 2012 even as all the trimarans spent nearly the entire Saturday night constantly manoeuvring their sails - also known as gybing - along the south coast of Spain. The fourth leg race, which began at Cascais, Portugal, is expected to conclude in Marseille, France on Monday. On Saturday afternoon, Musandam-Oman Sail was the first to converge with the Spanish coastline and almost immediately started benefitting from strong and warm winds. As the winds picked up, Musandam-Oman Sail skipper Sidney Gavignet and his crew made the most of the situation, making a quick round of the Cabo de Gata point to the east of Almeria in Spain in the evening.By Sunday morning, Musandam-Oman Sail led second-placed Race for Water by 95km. The gap between Musandam-Oman Sail and last-placed Groupe Edmond de Rothschild stood at 177km.The Steve Ravussin-skippered Race for Water, meanwhile, increased its lead over third-placed Foncia to 18km.Spindrift racing and Groupe Edmond de Rothschild are fighting it out for the fourth position while the fleet is anticipating some tricky light winds. In his message sent on Saturday night, Gavignet said, We are at Cartagena [in Spain] under a cloudy sky. We're not moving fast, but we're making progress. A few hours back, we were making 24 knots around Cabo de Gata. All is well now - dark night, some stars, clouds, more and more clouds.
