Oman- ITA symposium focuses on eliminating digital illiteracy


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) The Information Technology Authority (ITA), on Sunday organised a symposium titled ‘Knowledge Network and Multi Sector Partnership'. The opening ceremony was held under the patronage of H E Said bin Hamdoon bin Saif al Harthy, Undersecretary for Ports and Maritime Affairs in the Ministry of Transport and Communications.The symposium aimed to address the importance of eliminating digital illiteracy by presenting best practices and case studies from across the globe and discussed the potential for public-private partnership in the field.The symposium recommended enhancing the strategic cooperation with Telecentre.org Foundation to take advantage of its worldwide services and networks. The foundation aims to raise awareness about information and communication technology (ICT) primarily through the creation of 'telecentres', where people can access computers, the Internet and other digital technologies.Recommendations also incl-uded stimulating private sector institutions working in the field of information technology (IT) to provide computer training to individuals and professionals through community centres.Fahad Sultan al Abri, director general of the Digital Society Development division at ITA, said, ''ITA cooperated with different private institutions and established its first Community Knowledge Centres (CKCs) in October 2009. This step was to promote partnership between the government and the private sectors and in raising awareness about CKCs and Women Community Knowledge Centres (WCKC).''These are now spread throughout the sultanate and work towards reducing computer illiteracy by providing training in computer and Internet basics.''This initiative has trained 24,000 Omanis at 19 CKCs and has 59 trainers, Abri said.Seema al Kabi, team leader of the community IT training, said, ''The main challenge in providing technology-based services is the lack of awareness and resistance to change among some people.''
