Jordan- 'Telecom operators must focus on data'

(MENAFN- Jordan Times) Amid "harsh" competition in the telecom sector, operators in Jordan must focus on data services to sustain growth, Orange Jordan's newly appointed CEO Jean-Francois Thomas said on Sunday. In a press conference, Thomas added that the voice services market in Jordan is saturated and revenues from these services are declining throughout the sector. According to latest figures released by the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC), mobile penetration in Jordan reached 132 per cent by the end of first half of 2012. "Data is the future. According to the figures I saw recently, Jordanians spend a lot of time communicating and using voice services, but people use data services more and more for everyday life," Thomas told reporters on Sunday. He added that as broadband Internet becomes more widely available and the number of users rises, data consumption will increase, requiring companies to improve these services to keep attracting customers. Internet penetration in Jordan reached 55.9 per cent by the end of June with about 3.535 million users, according to the TRC. Nayla Khawam, Orange Jordan's former CEO, said at the press conference that telecom companies in Jordan also need to engage in projects abroad to increase their revenues and create more job opportunities for Jordanians. "Telecom operators should be part of regional infrastructure projects such as the regional cable network project or other similar projects," she said. Sunday's press conference was held to announce the launch of the second phase of Orange's Emtiyaz programme, which seeks to improve customer satisfaction.
