(MENAFN - Muscat Daily) British and US warships conducted an intensive anti-submarine exercise in the Sea of Oman this month in what was a welcome break from the usual maritime security and anti-piracy patrols, according to the UK's Ministry of Defence (MoD).Following a recent visit to Muscat, the UK Royal Navy Type 23 frigate HMS Sutherland headed into the Sea of Oman to team up with the Arleigh Burke class destroyer USS Nitze and a nuclear powered submarine, whose name and class were withheld.''The anti-submarine exercise allowed us to refresh and refine our core and advanced anti-submarine warfare skills in challenging environmental conditions,'' said Flight Commander Lt Earl Kingston on board HMS Sutherland. ''It also allowed us to work closely with our American cousins and make use of their submarine so we gained an insight into the different tactics they employ.''Before the exercise, the British and US vessels also conducted a replenishment at sea, known as a RAS, with the fast combat support ship USNS Supply. This exercise is not connected to the multinational minesweeping exercise taking place in the Gulf of Aden, Sea of Oman and Arabian Sea, which began on September 16 with warships from 20 countries taking part.
