Jordan- Water bill defaulters face supply cut

(MENAFN- Jordan Times) The Water Authority of Jordan (WAJ) on Wednesday urged subscribers to pay their outstanding water bills to avoid suspension of pumping to their households. WAJ Secretary General Fayez Batayneh called on water subscribers across the Kingdom to pay their dues to the authority which plans to start cutting the water supply of defaulters. "Subscribers across the country owe the authority around JD50 million" we urge people to settle their financial dues," Batayneh said. The authority will soon start a campaign, under which it will disconnect water from subscribers who don't pay their bills, the government official said, highlighting that the drive seeks to sustain WAJ services to the public. Also on Wednesday, the authority warned people against connecting their households to sewage pipelines, particularly those under construction. "Some residents of south Amman and towns in Irbid Governorate are illegally linking their households to sewage pipes and networks, which are still being extended," Batayneh said. He warned that such practices create environmental pollution and public safety hazards, in addition to delaying the implementation of sewage projects. "These people must immediately rectify their violations, otherwise the authority will be forced to take legal action against violators in accordance with the law," Batayneh added. Under Article 30 of the WAJ law, violators are fined up to JD5,000 and jailed for two years, while Article 456 of the Penal Code stipulates that violators of water networks face three- to six-month prison terms and fines ranging between JD100 and JD1,000, according to Batayneh. He noted that the fine for repeat offenders is JD1,000 and they face four months to two years imprisonment.
