11,000 American Airlines employees receive layoff notices

(MENAFN) American Airlines' spokesman, Bruce Hicks, announced that as part of the carrier's bankruptcy reorganization, it has issued over 11,000 layoff notices, reported Reuters. Hicks said that the notices were mandatory under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, which requires workers to be notified 60 days before major layoffs or factory closures. The carrier forecasts that 4,400 people of those who received notices will be dismissed in November and December. The notices were sent to more than 3,000 workers in Dallas and Fort Worth, Texas, where the company is based; and to nearly 3,000 employees in Tulsa, Oklahoma; just over 1,200 in Miami; around 1,000 in New York; almost 900 in Chicago and lesser numbers in other US cities. The airline, which filed for Chapter 11 protection in November, outlined plans to slash 14,000 jobs to restructure bankruptcy. The Transport Workers Union, which represents workers that received WARN Act notices, said that nearly 800 employees had consented to leave the carrier voluntarily, a move that will cut the number of expected layoffs. It is worth noting that American Airlines also unveiled plans to reduce flights by 1-2 percent for the rest of September and October.
