Oman- OSWL holds discussion on freedom of expression

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) The Omani Society for Writers and Literati (OSWL) held a panel discussion on ‘Freedom of expression…between reality and ambition' on Sunday. Many of the panelists called for reshaping laws related to freedom of expression. The panel included author Muna Jaboob, lawyers Yaqoub al Harthi and Khalifa al Hinai, Public Prosecution representative Mohammed al Marzouqi, online newspaper Al Falaq editor Dr Al Mutasim al Bahlani and SQU law student Fahad al Aghbari.Muna said that people do not have a problem with the legislative or executive body. ''Instead, they have a problem with the law, which is not clear. This allows the authorities to interpret it in any way they want. Thus we need clear legal statements that complete the law.''She added that a conscious generation will help in strengthening the country. ''The appearance of a civil society and new generation that can express their opinions should not worry the government because such things make the country stronger.''''I wish we would first preserve an individual's right to freedom of expression and then focus on regulating the rules associated with it,'' Harthi said.Public Prosecution spokesman Marzouqi said, ''There is a shallow understanding of law and its importance among the public in the country. Further, the Public Prosecution is an executive body of the law, not a legislative one.''According to Marzouqi, commenting on and degrading the sentences pronounced destabilises trust in the judiciary, which is a prerequisite for resolving disputes.''We know that everybody has the country's best interests at heart. However, the legally specified methods must be followed because the intention doesn't justify the means.''
