He was a prominent member of Muscat Marlins, the school's swimming contingent. The lanky swimmer currently resides in Bolton, Manchester. He trains under Emma Swanwick and studies at Bolton School in sixth form. Commenting on the selection that is easily the biggest break in his fledgling career, Pender said, ''When I got the e-mail to say I'd been selected, I was so excited. Being part of the Irish junior national squad makes me very proud. I plan to make the most of this opportunity. ''This is an honour for me. I'm determined to achieve the best results I possibly can. The support I've received from my coach [Swanwick], my family and my Bolton Metro teammates has been fantastic. That makes all the difference when you're getting up for training at 4am and it's dark, cold and wet outside.''The youngster's new season begins in a month's time and he is looking forward to the new challenge. ''I took five weeks off after the youth national championships here in July. I've been back in the pool for just over a week,'' he said.''I'm excited about the upcoming season. Getting selected to the junior national team is such a great motivator.''
