Oman to host ITF West Asia U13 meet


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) The sultanate will host the ITF West Asia U13 Development Tennis Championship for the second successive year at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex from September 23 to October 4, the Oman Tennis Association (OTA) announced on Saturday.A total of 11 countries, including hosts Oman, will take part in the competition that will be played under the banner of the International Tennis Federation (ITF). Speaking to Muscat Daily, Salman al Balushi, the OTA's executive manager, said, ''We hosted this event last year and we are happy to host it again. The championship will feature two successive tournaments - from September 25-28 and then from September 30-October 3.''According to Karim Sadallah, the OTA's technical adviser, ''Oman will participate in both the girls' and boys' events with five players in each category. Romeo Del Mundo and Josephine Pagayo of Philippines are coaching the Omani players for this championship.''The Omani boys' contingent comprises Abdullah al Barwani, Ahmed al Barwani, Younis al Rawahi, Abdullah al Awaidy and Zakariya al Suleimani. The Omani girls' unit includes Maryam al Balushi, Shahrazad al Barakat, Talia al Balushi, Salma al Sharji and Aisha al Suleimani.Also, on the sidelines of the tournament, the OTA will organise an umpires' course for local officials from September 22-27, to be followed by a coaches' course from October 3-4. Egypt's Hani El Khafif will conduct the umpires' course and Sadallah will be the instructor for the coaches' course.Participating nations: Oman, Yemen, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, UAE, Kuwait, Jordan, Iraq, Iran and Bahrain.
