Oman- Sultanate to celebrate World Ozone Day today

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Oman will join the rest of the world in observing World Ozone Day on Sunday under the slogan 'Protection of our atmosphere is a service provided for future generations'.The day marks the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Montreal Protocol. This year's theme demonstrates the importance of efforts to prevent the depletion of the ozone layer and its aftermath.''Scientific facts have proved that chemicals, which are widely used in many industrial applications, lead to the destruction of the ozone layer, which protects the earth from harmful ultraviolet rays coming from the sun."The resulting increase in radiation harms all forms of life,'' said an official from the Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs (MECA).The sultanate signed the Vienna Convention and Montreal Protocol on substances that deplete the ozone layer and its amendments in both London (1990) and Copenhagen (1992), as per the Royal Decree 73/98.''Oman has been ranked as one of the countries mentioned in Article 5 of the Protocol, which states that the annual average consumption of materials that dep-lete the ozone layer is less than 0.3kg,'' the official said.As part of the countrywide programme, a project for the disposal of materials that deplete the ozone layer was conducted by MECA in collaboration with the United Nations for Industrial Development Organisation in the year 2000.The project resulted in a number of conclusions, the most important of which is that the sultanate is free of installations that produce ozone depleting material. Also, the average consumption per individual in the sultanate of ozone depleting materials is about 0.116kg.
