Jordan- Election authorities begin push to boost voter registration

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The number of voters registered for the upcoming parliamentary elections reached more than 1.2 million by the end of Saturday, according to Independent Elections Commission (IEC) Spokesperson Hussein Bani Hani. A total of 23,137 voters registered on Friday and 48,182 on Saturday, he said, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. Meanwhile, a team from the Civil Status and Passports Department (CSPD) will begin visiting a number of public and private institutions on Sunday to help employees there register and obtain voter identification cards. The move is intended to save workers time and to help them register their family members as well. The CSPD team, which started these visits earlier this month, is scheduled to visit the ministries of public works, political development and finance, in addition to the Orphans Fund Development Foundation, the Audit Bureau and the Companies Control Department. On Monday, the team will visit the health ministry, the Natural Resources Authority, the Public Antiquities Department, the Jordan News Agency, Zain telecommunications company, the Jordanian Free Zones Corporation and the Jordan Petroleum Refinery Company offices in Zarqa. The CSPD urged eligible voters to bring their civil ID cards, even if expired, and their family books. A mobile CSPD station will help citizens across the Kingdom register for elections in remote places far from the department's offices, Petra reported. CSPD Director General Marwan Qteishat said there are 126,638 new eligible voters this year who reached the age of 18. There are around three million eligible voters in the Kingdom, according to official estimates. IEC President Abdul Ilah Khatib on Saturday reiterated the commission's commitment to ensuring the integrity and transparency of the voter registration process. During visits to Maan and Tafileh to check on voter registration centres, he called for facilitating procedures for citizens, stressing the IEC's willingness to increase the number of polling stations to enable more citizens to practise their right to take part in the elections. He listened to briefings on services provided to citizens by the CSPD and the number of people who registered for the elections in the two governorates. The deadline for voter registration is September 30.
