(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) Amel Alfghai, social worker at the General Department of Anti-Narcotics of the Dubai Police, said that the department has provided psychiatrist support to a family, especially the mother, who has gone through an extremely difficult patch in life.
She said that the case dates back to 2011 when a mother, who was unwell, contacted the department after her two sons died of drug overdose and another was in the Dubai prison for drug use.
Amel said they had named the case 'mother of drug addicts' as this was a rare condition in the UAE society, a single mother suffering after all her sons were destroyed by drugs. The mother told the police that she had four sons, three daughters and five grandchildren.
Amel said that the father had died a few years ago and left her with seven children. "No one could take care or support the family so she began to work. But after a while, she discovered that the elder son had become addicted to heroin and when she confronted him he denied it until she found him dead in a hospital due to an overdose. After that she found the second son dead in his room and in very bad condition after using heroin. After that, the third son was caught by the police and charged for drug use. When she learnt that the fourth one was also using drugs, she contacted the police which in turn referred him to Al Amal Hospital.
Amel said the elder son was married and had a child, who lived with the grandmother. The third son who was jailed, had three children and they too lived with the grandmother who had been diagnosed with diabetes and blood pressure and other diseases.
The mother now supports the family from an amount given to her by the Ministry of Social Affairs and the Dubai Police.
Amel has called upon parents to look after their children so that they do not turn to drug use.
