Qatargas to supply 20 mln tons of LNG to Japan

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Qatar Liquefied Gas Company Ltd. (Qatargas 1) on Wednesday announced a new short-term LNG Sales and Purchase Agreement with Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) to supply 20 million tons of LNG per year on a long-term basis starting this year. Japan was hit by a massive magnitude-9.0 earthquake and tsunami in March last year, which left behind some 11,000 killed and missing. "The agreement is an addition to previous long-term ones," a statement by the Qatari company noted, adding that this procedure is seen as a serious commitment towards securing energy supplies to Japan, as well as sound proof of sturdy relations between Qatargas and its customers in Japan. Qatargas, one of two LNG production units of Qatar Petroleum, is banking on its rapid response to the crisis to bolster its reputation as a reliable long-term fuel supplier.
