Jordan- Judeh discusses elections with EU delegations

(MENAFN- Jordan Times) Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Judeh on Wednesday met with a delegation of experts from the EU to discuss preparations to send a European mission to monitor the upcoming parliamentary elections. Judeh said inviting a European delegation to monitor the elections was in line with His Majesty King Abdullah's commitment to ensure transparent elections and entrench the concepts of democracy and political reform in the Kingdom. He highlighted the government's measures to facilitate voter registration, stressing Jordan's willingness to provide the EU delegates with any needed assistance in their mission during the elections. The minister voiced his appreciation for the EU's role in supporting the political reform process in the Kingdom. For his part, the head of the delegation commended the measures taken by the government in preparation for the elections. The experts, who represent several international organisations, are currently on a visit to the Kingdom upon an invitation from the Independent Elections Commission to become acquainted with preparations for the elections ahead of sending European observers to monitor the process. Also on Wednesday, Senate President Taher Masri met with the delegates and discussed Jordan's efforts to reach comprehensive political reform. The meeting was attended by EU Ambassador in Amman Joanna Wronecka. Lower House Speaker Abdul Karim Dughmi also met with the delegates and highlighted the constitutional amendments made to arrive at reform, particularly in relation to the Elections Law and the constitutional court. He said that press and speech freedoms are "high" in Jordan and that the Press and Publications Law was being amended to regulate news websites in a way that does not harm the owners or users of these sites. The European experts said they had met with members of civil society organisations, political parties and the Parliament, noting that they will come up with recommendations for the government in order to ensure even better elections.
