IAEA calls for immediate access to Iran''s Parchin military site

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Yukiya Amano expressed Monday deep concerns regarding Iran's nuclear activities, calling to grant his inspectors immediate access to the Parchin military site. In a speech he delivered to IAEA's Board Council of Governors, Amano also said it was "frustrating" that the IAEA and Iran had made no real progress in talks that began in January aimed at allaying concern about suspected atom bomb research. "This is frustrating because we will not be in a position to clarify all outstanding issues without their full engagement", Amano said and added that cooperation by the government in Tehran was "essential." Saying Tehran must address the substance of the U.N. agency's questions, Amano later told a news conference he was committed to intensifying the dialogue with Iran but that no date had been set yet for a new meeting. "We need to stop going around in circles discussing process, Iran has the obligation to fully cooperate with us," Amano added. An IAEA report published in August stated that Iran had significantly expanded its uranium enrichment production at its underground Fordo plant during the last months, nurturing suspicion about the programs peaceful nature. In June, IAEA head Yukiya Amano demanded that Iran allow the authorities to access the military base Parchin. Amano had visited Teheran personally in May, and spoken to Iran's chief negotiator, Sayed Jalili. Last Saturday, EU foreign ministers met in Cyprus to discuss more sanctions against Iran, they are expecting a clear signal from the IAEA board of governors this week. So far, Iran has refused international access to certain nuclear research centers. European Union heavyweights Britain, France and Germany called last week for new sanctions and Canada has unexpectedly severed ties with Iran.
