Jordan- Registered voters cross one million mark

(MENAFN- Jordan Times) The total number of eligible voters who have registered for the upcoming parliamentary elections crossed the one million mark on Monday. The total number of registered voters stood at 1.01 million by the end of Monday's working day, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. Independent Elections Commission (IEC) Spokesperson Hussein Bani Hani said 42,444 voters registered on Monday alone. The number of citizens who are registering for the elections, slated for later this year, has been on the rise since the end of Eid Al Fitr holiday, standing at more than 40,000 a day. An average of 50,000 people have registered on a daily basis during last week. Official figures estimate the number of eligible voters at around three million. The registration process, which began in early August, was scheduled to conclude earlier this month, but the IEC extended it to continue until the end of September. Under Article 4 of the 2012 Elections Law, the IEC has the jurisdiction to extend the registration period "if it deems it necessary". Meanwhile, the IEC on Monday prevented attempts at the illegal collective transfer of voter names from Ramtha District in Irbid to Jerash Governorate after being informed of such violations by the Civil Coalition (RASID), an elections watchdog. The coalition, led by the National Centre for Human Rights, comprises several civil society institutions tasked with monitoring the registration process for the upcoming parliamentary polls, Petra reported. In a statement, RASID said inspectors from the alliance have followed a person holding lists of the names of voters, asking that they be transferred to another district upon a telephone call from an employee at the Ramtha election registration centre. For his part, Director General of the Civil Status and Passports Department Marwan Qteishat said the department will investigate the incident and take the necessary action according to the law.
