Thousands of S Africa's Gold Fields miners go on illegal strike

(MENAFN) 15,000 miners at South Africa's Gold Fields Ltd left their working posts on strike in the west section of its KDC mine in the West Rand, Reuters reported. The world's fourth largest gold producer said it was not clear why the miners are striking, adding that the east section of the mine is still operating normally. The wildcat strike came a week after Gold Fields resolved an illegal strike by 12,000 workers at its KDC East mine which started because of rank and file discontent with the local branch of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM). In the platinum sector, the labour conflict has had its origins in a conflict between members of the dominant NUM and the more militant Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU), which is mounting a challenge. There is an increasing discontent against NUM among poorly-paid mineworkers who see its leadership as out of touch and too interested in politics because of the union leadership's close links to the ruling African National Congress (ANC).
