UAE- Man on trial for Facebook threat

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) A man allegedly threatened to kill a woman co-worker in a post on Facebook, a court heard on Sunday. The 33-year-old Sri Lankan electrician is accused of threatening to kill the Filipina waitress after she turned down his marriage proposal. He allegedly sent her an SMS with the same threatening content. He faced the charge of threatening to commit a crime with the use of Internet at the Court of First Instance. The Jebel Ali police arrested the defendant and seized his laptop in April. The accused said during the investigation that he had met the complainant about two and a half years ago. They had been in a relationship for about one year. He lent her Dh1,000 and she did not pay it back. She was ignoring his calls, he alleged. He admitted he wrote on his Facebook page that he wanted to kill her and asked people how he could do it. The complainant, a 24-year-old Filipina waitress, told the prosecutor that she and the defendant used to work in the same hotel in Abu Dhabi. He proposed to her but she turned him down. He kept on insisting on her to marry him and harassing her. She was shifted to work in Dubai and the accused kept calling her and sending her SMS. She cancelled her mobile number so that the accused would not contact her. She later knew from a friend that the defendant posted a line on his Facebook page saying he wanted to kill her. He asked the other users to help him find a way to kill her. The complainant opened the defendant's page and checked it for herself that the threatening line was there. She filed a police complaint against him. A Filipina staff supervisor, who works in the same hotel where the defendant and the complainant worked, testified that the accused proposed to the complainant. When the latter turned him down he kept harassing her. In the end of March, she was using Facebook when she saw the line in which the defendant said he wanted to kill the complainant and asked the others for help.
