UAE- Bribe for power supply: Man on trial

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The Abu Dhabi Public Prosecution for Investigating Financial Crimes has referred an Arab employee working for the Abu Dhabi Distribution Company, to court to stand trial on charges of soliciting and collecting a bribe of Dh10,000 for giving power connection to two housing projects in Khalifa District 'A'. The accused allegedly asked for Dh5,000 to give power supply to each villa. The investigations by the public prosecution showed that a contractor filed a complaint with Abu Dhabi Distribution Company (ADDC), alleging that an employee with ADDC's branch demanded Dh10,000 for giving power connection to two villa projects though an order was already issued to provide the projects with power supply. The investigation also showed that the employee in charge of connecting power to the projects had lagged behind in fulfilling the order. When the engineer in charge of the projects requested the accused to expedite the fulfillment of the power connection order, the latter asked him for Dh10,000. The contracting company hence lodged a complaint with Abu Dhabi Distribution Company, a local water and electricity provider. The company caught him red-handed when he collected the illegal money. However, when asked about the money, the accused said it was given to him by the project engineer as charity on the occasion of the holy month of Ramadan.
