Michelle's morale booster

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) AMERICAN FIRST Lady Michelle Obama's powerful, 26-minute speech on the opening night of the Democratic National Convention at Charlotte, North Carolina, on Tuesday has electrified the party's flagging re-election campaign, and also injected the much-needed healing touch in what has so far been a bitter and divisive run-up to the polls. While most Democrats and Republicans have been heaping scorn on rivals and reviling their opponents over the past few months, Michelle's passionate and poignant plea for more sensible politics has come as a refreshing change. Michelle, who like husband Barack Obama, struggled through life as her parents battled poverty, ill-health and discrimination, before acquiring degrees from prestigious institutions including Princeton and Harvard Law School and working at a top law firm, is an outstanding example of the American success story. Her illuminating tour de force at the Democratic convention at Charlotte tackled all the controversial issues that are dogging American society and caused a great rift between the two main parties, but without injecting any rancour or ill-feeling. When Barack Obama was sworn in as President of the US nearly four years ago, he promised to bring in a whiff of change to stale old Washington DC, giving hopes of a fresh new approach towards bipartisan issues that have dogged Capitol Hill for years. But it did not take long before reality sunk in and it was back to the same old cynical games, with Congress gridlocked and new initiatives compromised at the altar of realpolitik. Michelle, however, reassured the public that she had seen firsthand "that being president doesn't change who you are - it reveals who you are" And I didn't think that it was possible, but let me tell you today, I love my husband even more than I did four years ago, even more than I did 23 years ago, when we first met". With the American economy still in the doldrums, and the world's only superpower continuing to face problems in Afghanistan, Iraq and other trouble spots around the globe, Obama is facing an uphill task in convincing voters on the need to re-elect him in the November elections. His aggressive Republican rival led by Mitt Romney are portraying him as a weak and indecisive President, unable to pull America out of its present state of despondency. Hopefully, Michelle's mesmerising performance should boost the sagging morale of the Obama campaign team and do wonders for the president's re-election bid.
