(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) A new revolutionary surgical technique that offers scarless abdominal operations is now available for the first time in the Middle East at Abu Dhabi's Burjeel Hospital.
The technique, known as Natural Orifice Surgery (NOS), is a recent medical development that uses the human body's natural openings - such as the mouth, urethra, anus and vaginal canal - for a thin, flexible tube or endoscope to gain access to organs in the abdominal cavity.
A small incision is made in the internal wall of the stomach, vagina, bladder or colon to reach the target area of the surgery, thus, avoiding any external incision and its resultant scar and potential complications such as pain, infection and hernia.
Dr Tahar Benhidjeb, head of surgery at Burjeel and a renowned practitioner of NOS, strongly advocates the method, especially for women requiring surgical intervention for abdominal conditions.
"The biggest plus of NOS is that being the most minimally invasive technique at present, it causes almost no pain or discomfort. This allows for faster recovery of the patient and a woman who has this type of surgery will be able to go home the very next day, which is unlikely with any other technique for a major abdominal surgery," Dr Benhidjeb said.
"Not only is this procedure safe, but it also has economic benefits; it has lower costs and, being a healthier solution, (it) leads to faster recovery of the patient," he added.
Explaining the procedure, Dr Benhidjeb said a 5mm small trocar is inserted through the umbilicus and to control and keep an eye on the operation a 10mm camera and a 5mm grasper are also inserted through the vagina. This allows the highest possible safety for the patient.
According to Dr Benhidjeb, one of the advantages of the NOS is less chance of accidental injury of main blood vessels. There is also no risk of hernia and the wall of the Douglas pouch repairs itself without leaving scars.
