UAE- Schools reopen to full strength


(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) Classes started this week in some private schools in the Capital with a good number of students turning up on the first day. According to V.K. Mathu, advisor to the Abu Dhabi Indian School, "attendance was nearly hundred per cent" on Sunday, with the exception of a few who has taken ill after the two-month-long holiday. Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Private International English School in Mussafah, resumed classes on Sunday with most of the students present apart from some who was unable to fly back on time, said principal Girija Baiju. "They'll all come next week. Parents are very particular, they don't want their children to miss classes," she added. The school has around 1,400 students in its rolls. Both the Indian schools follow the Asian calendar and started the new term in April. For some schools including the British School Al Khubairat (BSAK) and the Canadian International School, the new academic year started on Sunday. The British International School Abu Dhabi (BISAD) commenced on Tuesday while Al Yasmina and Raha International schools will begin the new term today. Wayne MacInnis, principal of Raha International School, expects that most of his students will be back on the first day. "I'll say 90 per cent," he added. Next week, Al Rayyan National Private School and Asian International Private School in Madinat Zayed will start classes at the same time as the government schools on September 9. Dr Afsar Khan, principal of Al Rayyan said he anticipated full attendance on the first day. "Because we were supposed to start on September 2 and students are eagerly waiting," he explained. Molly D'Coutho, principal of Asian International in the Western Region, said teachers will be fully-prepared when they welcome their students next week. "We have different workshops in the next three days for the teachers (covering) motivation, how to be an effective teacher and setting their minds and souls," she told Khaleej Times. After two months, the students are excited to get back to school, see old friends and meet new ones. Deane Wurster, whose two kids attend the Canadian International School in Khalifa City A, said the Grades 5 and 6 pupils were so excited that they woke up at 5.30am on Sunday. "Of course, that's the first day of school and they can't wait to see their old friends," said the Filipina mother. British mom Mel Hughes said her seven-year-old son who goes to BISAD was thrilled to go back to school on Tuesday, but admitted to missing the UK weather at this time of year. She, herself, is more than delighted to be back to Abu Dhabi after the summer break and meet up with other moms.
