UAE- Municipal inspector charged with bribery

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) A municipal inspector stood trial in the Court of First Instance on Tuesday in nine cases of bribery. The 28-year-old Emirati inspector at the Dubai Municipality, allegedly solicited Dh5,000 bribe nine times from businesses for issuing construction licences and discarding existing violations. An officer in the Criminal Follow-up Department of the Dubai Police said they learnt from the Dubai Municipality Inspection Section in May last year that the defendant was going on inspections outside Hatta, which was his jurisdiction area. He allegedly extorted shopkeepers in Ras Al Khor for sums of money for not issuing them tickets for the violations in the unlicensed constructions in their shop buildings. The police arrested the accused with the help of one of the shopkeepers in Ras Al Khor, whom he allegedly extorted to discard the construction violations on his shop. He was caught red-handed after he collected Dh2,000, belonging to the police, from that shopkeeper. While the police officers were still there, many nearby shopkeepers approached them and complained about being extorted in the same way by the defendant. They all filed similar criminal complaints. The accused admitted during the interrogation that he extorted Dh5,000 each from businesses during his inspection visits to discard the construction additions and violations. He also claimed to them that he would issue municipal licences for those additions.
