Jordan- Two men convicted of raping Sri Lankan woman

(MENAFN- Jordan Times) The Criminal Court has sentenced two men to prison for raping a Sri Lankan woman in the capital's Hashemi Shamali suburb in November 2008. The court declared M.A., 30, and M.Q., 32, guilty of raping the 21-year-old factory worker at a house in Hashemi Shamali and sentenced them to 15 and 20 years in prison respectively. The court said the two defendants - and a third who was not identified in the charge sheet - were drunk on the day of the incident and attempted to stop the victim who was returning to her apartment from work in the same neighbourhood. "The victim ran to a nearby house where some of her co-workers lived, seeking their help but the defendants followed her and threatened everyone with an axe and sword they were carrying," the court said. The defendants locked the men in one room after one of them claimed to be a police officer, then took the woman to a separate room and took turns raping her, according to court papers. In the meantime, the inhabitants of the house managed to overpower the defendants and took the victim to the Family Protection Department where they filed a sexual assault complaint against the defendants, the court added. Police were able to arrest two suspects while the third man remained unidentified and at large, the court said. The tribunal comprised judges Atef Jaradat, Firas Khashashneh and Omar Atharbeh. The Cassation Court has started reviewing the verdict, which was issued recently.
