Jordan Police deny reports of deputy chief kidnapping

(MENAFN- Jordan Times) Police on Monday said they were questioning a policeman stationed at the Juweideh Correctional and Rehabilitation Centre who allegedly opened fire at random inside the prison. No one was injured in the shooting that occurred in a food hall at the facility and lasted 30 minutes, a senior police official told The Jordan Times. "The situation was contained when Public Security Department [PSD] Deputy Director Maj. Gen. Mohammad Raqqad arrived at the prison and convinced the man to put down his weapon," the official added. The suspect agreed and went with Raqqad in his vehicle to the PSD headquarters to discuss the incident, according to the official. "Raqqad listened to the suspect's demands and allegations and ordered the formation of a committee to look into his grievances," the official said, adding that the policeman claimed he was mistreated and abused by one of his colleagues while on duty in the prison. The suspect was ordered detained at the Naour Police Correctional and Rehabilitation Centre pending further investigation. The official strongly denied news reports that Raqqad was kidnapped at gunpoint. Another PSD official, who requested anonymity, told The Jordan Times earlier in the day that the suspect went into a fit of fury following an argument with his superior officer, moved to the main yard of the prison and started to fire his gun in the air, accidentally injuring a prison guard. The PSD official said that Raqqad went to the prison to investigate the incident, and during the interrogation, the sergeant managed to get hold of the general's gun and forced the latter to drive his car to the PSD headquarters, where the kidnapper turned himself in and a probe was initiated. But the official source insisted that the kidnap story was incorrect and that the suspect went willingly with Raqqad to the PSD headquarters, where they "two sipped coffee and solved the problem peacefully".
