Jordan- School canteen inspections to intensify

(MENAFN- Jordan Times) With some 1.7 million students across the Kingdom back in school this week, the Ministry of Health on Sunday said inspections of school canteens would be intensified to monitor the implementation of food safety regulations. Minister of Health Abdul Latif Wreikat warned schools not to violate the school canteen regulations that were modified last month, noting that "children's health is a priority". The minister also said that principals would be responsible for implementing these regulations and asked health directorates across the country to follow up on the issue. As per the newly modified regulations, the ministry has prepared a list of foods that are permissible and impermissible to sell to students in schools. The list of allowed food includes milk, natural juice and yoghurt (which must be refrigerated) sandwiches that do not contain meat or chicken, biscuits, natural potato chips, dates, fruits and vegetables. Soft drinks, artificial juices, coloured food products, chocolate, gum, chicken and meat sandwiches, eggs, other types of chips and ice cream may not be sold in school canteens, according to the list, a copy of which was made available to The Jordan Times.
