Jordan- Ramtha border crossing closed

(MENAFN- Jordan Times) The Ramtha border crossing between Jordan and Syria was closed indefinitely on Sunday, an official said. "The Syrian side decided to close the border because the situation on their side is dangerous and unstable," said a senior official source, who declined to be named. "Naturally," he added, "this led to the closure from our side" of the border, located near the city of Ramtha, 90 kilometres north of Amman. However, the source added, the Jaber border crossing in Mafraq remains open. "Trucks and passengers are going through the border normally," he said. The Syrian border town of Daraa has been a focal point of clashes between regime and rebel forces during the uprising that began in Syria a year-and-a-half ago, and residents of the northern region have said they regularly see and hear shelling and gunfire across the border. Ramtha and Daraa were hubs of cross-border trade prior to the violence in Syria, while many residents of the two towns share family ties.
