Jordan urges cooperation, peace at Tehran summit

(MENAFN- Jordan Times) Deputising for His Majesty King Abdullah, HRH Prince Hassan on Friday addressed the 16th summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in Tehran, in which 120 countries participated. Delivering Jordan's speech on the last day of the summit, the prince stressed that Jordan's policy has been and always will be based on cooperation with the international community on the basis of mutual respect, non-interference in the affairs of others, and supporting programmes and policies that promote world peace and development. Jordan has always been keen to actively participate in NAM, he said, expressing hope that the summit's resolutions would contribute to increasing solidarity between NAM and the rest of the international community to realise security and stability around the world. Underlining that human dignity and social justice are the foundations of development, Prince Hassan said NAM could play an effective role in facing the global financial crisis as well as the challenge of food security. He stressed the need to pay more attention to youth, women and educational issues in order to achieve sustainable development. The prince called for activating the establishment of a global fund for zakat and solidarity, which he said would be of great benefit to Islamic countries and the world in general. The movement should support the establishment of a semi-permanent conference for peace based within the regions that are in need of peace, security and development, he added. Prince Hassan reiterated Jordan's position on the Palestinian cause as the central issue in the region, stressing the Kingdom's support for the Palestinians in their efforts to establish their own independent state on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital. He also pointed to the need to support efforts to reach a political solution to the Syrian crisis to end the bloodshed and violence and restore stability in the country in line with the aspirations of the Syrian people. The prince noted that any delay in dealing with the crisis will lead to foreign intervention and will increase the burden on the countries neighbouring Syria, especially Jordan. On the sidelines of the summit, the prince met with heads of several participating delegations and discussed means to increase cooperation among NAM member states.
