Jordan- 'Only Syrians registered with UNHCR to enrol at schools'

(MENAFN- Jordan Times) Minister of Education Fayez Saudi announced on Wednesday that only Syrian children whose families are registered with the UN Refugee Agency are eligible to enrol in the Kingdom's public schools. However, priority will be given to Jordanian students, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, quoted Saudi as saying. The minister estimated the number of school-age Syrian children in Jordan at 17,000. During a visit to Ramtha, Saudi also underlined the ministry's commitment to implement His Majesty King Abdullah's directives to improve the learning process and provide teachers and students with a proper educational environment. King Abdullah on Monday met with members of the education council, which is responsible for drawing up the Kingdom's education strategy, and instructed the concerned authorities to propose a comprehensive plan to improve the education sector in Jordan. The proposed plan will serve as guidelines for a projected nationwide specialised conference on education improvement, the King said. The school year starts next week on Sunday.
