Jordan- Postponing elections would be risky

(MENAFN- Jordan Times) Senate President Taher Masri on Tuesday said postponing the upcoming parliamentary elections would be "risky". During an interview with Jordan Television, Masri said that putting off the next elections would be harmful to the country in many respects, adding that the government must do whatever it takes to conduct the next polls with complete fairness and transparency in order to avert suspicions and distrust about the elections and to prove that the state is serious about achieving envisioned reform. Noting that the country witnessed riots and acts of violence following the announcement of the results of the 2010 elections, the former prime minister suggested that to avoid any similar scenarios, the state must draw up a roadmap for elections to assure the public that it is serious about conducting them fairly and to encourage participation. Describing the establishment of the Independent Elections Commission as a "progressive step", Masri underlined that the government's aim in founding the monitoring agency was, in principle, to prove that it can conduct fair and transparent elections capable of ultimately producing a Lower House that can represent all segments of society. Masri added that he intends to run in the next parliamentary elections but that his final decision will depend on future circumstances.
