(MENAFN- Jordan Times) A new gastrointestinal endoscopy unit has opened at Al Bashir Hospital as part of an ongoing plan to renovate and expand the Kingdom's main public healthcare facility, a hospital administrator said on Saturday.
Waseem Hamoudi, director of the newly established unit, said the facility now has four diagnosis rooms and a recovery room, equipped with up-to-date medical technologies.
The expanded unit is staffed by five gastroenterologists and hepatologists in addition to seven specialised nurses.
Previously, Hamoudi said, the unit had only two diagnosis rooms and was always crowded.
The unit was the first gastrointestinal endoscopy unit to be established in the Kingdom when it opened 39 years ago, in which time more than 200,000 endoscopies were performed in it.
According to figures sent to The Jordan Times, 15,583 upper endoscopies, 6,217 colonoscopies and 1,212 endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatographies have been conducted in that unit over the past five years.
The expansion of the endoscopy unit is part of the hospital's overall expansion plan, under which a new unit for diabetes was opened two months ago and an organ transplantation unit began operating in July.
Earlier this year, the health ministry announced a JD55 million plan to expand Al Bashir Hospital into a five-hospital medical city.
The upgrade of the country's major public hospital is part of a comprehensive effort to improve the health ministry's facilities around the country, officials said.
Al Bashir Hospital, which serves a population of over 2.3 million people and employs some 600 doctors, has undergone several renovations in the past year, with new obstetrics and gynaecology departments opened last September and plans announced to open a specialised dental centre.
