Oman- Rawahi duo hopeful of improved show

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) The Rawahi brothers, the only participants from Oman in the CIK-FIA U18 World Karting Championship, hope to come up with an improved show in the second round of the championship at the French city of Angerville on Saturday and Sunday.

Speaking to Muscat Daily ahead of their departure to Paris on Thursday, Sanad al Rawahi said, ''We are better prepared for the second round.

We did not have much time to prepare for the first round in the Portuguese city of Braga in July. However, we gained a lot of experience from the first round. We are now confident of avoiding mistakes.'' The 17 year old had finished 50th among a list of 90 participants in the first round while his younger brother, Abdullah, finished better with an overall 44th place.

Sanad's brother, 15 year old Abdullah, said, ''We had one event ahead of the worlds in Braga when we competed in Austria. But after Braga, we took part in three more championships, which included Central Eastern European Championship in Hungary, Rotax Max Euro Challenge in Sweden and the Austrian national championship.

The experience we have gained while racing in Europe has not only improved our skills but also given us confidence to take on the much experienced drivers in the second round.'' Abdullah displayed good form in the races in Hungary, Austria and Sweden. The younger Rawahi, who now races in the Senior class along with his brother owing to his gain in weight, had boosted his confidence with a couple of podium positions.

''I was third at the two races of the Austrian championships. In both the races, Sanad closely followed me. In fact, even during the other three races and in Braga, we were competing amongst ourselves and in the process committed silly mistakes. We have learned a few lessons and are more focused,'' said Abdullah.

Sanad added, ''The major challenge has been to get used to the grip as the tracks [in France] are much different than what we normally race on in UAE. By competing in more European championships, we have now improved.'' The Rawahis competed in the Central Eastern European Championship at the Pannonia Ring in Hungary and followed up in the Rotax Max Euro Challenge third round race in the Swedish city of Kristianstad.

''It was a new experience as the best drivers from Europe were there in Kristianstad. The wet conditions added to the challenge. Though we failed to qualify for the finals in Sweden, we emerged with more confidence,'' said Sanad. The qualifying races in Angerville will start on Saturday followed by heats. Drivers who qualify for the final phase will race on Sunday with the aim of collecting as many points as possible in the Championship, which concludes in Ba
