Oman- OC shortlists Lankan great Mendis for national coach's job

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Former Sri Lankan great Duleep Mendis is among the three names that have been shortlisted by Oman Cricket (OC) for the national team coach's job ahead of the ACC Elite Cup 2012 to be played in the UAE from October 1-13.

Pakistan's Asif Mujtaba and former Sri Lankan first-class cricketer Lantra Fernando are also on the shortlist.

Madhu Jesrani, OC general secretary, confirmed that talks are on with the three and the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) has also been kept in the loop. ACC development officer and former Oman coach, Iqbal Sikander, is negotiating for Oman.

A decision is expected soon as the OC plans to finalise the national coach by the first week of September.

Oman's preparations for the ACC Elite Cup is yet to begin with a little over a month to go for the tournament, and the OC is yet again on usual turf - looking to pick a national coach only on ad hoc basis.

Jesrani said that the OC is not willing to hire a full-time coach as it doesn't have enough financial resources.

''We can't afford a full-time coach. The OC is not in a position to pay for a full-time coach. I agree that it is a big disadvantage for the national team, but we don't have a choice at the moment,'' he said.
