Iraq asks Total to cancel Kurdish deals or get out of Halfaya

(MENAFN) Baghdad has warned French oil and gas giant Total to halt its energy deal with Iraq's semi-independent Kurdistan region or give up its stake in the Halfaya oilfield, Reuters reported. Faisal Abdullah, a spokesman for Deputy Prime Minister for Energy Hussain al-Shahristani said that the government has officially requested Total to freeze or cancel its contract with the Kurdish region and respect Iraqi law or sell its stake in Halfaya oilfield. Central government says contracts signed with Kurdistan without returning to Baghdad are illegal. Last month Iraq decided to blacklist Chevron Corp and bar it from signing any oil deals with the oil ministry after the US oil giant bought stakes in two blocks in Iraq's Kurdistan.
