Jordan- Man sentenced to 20 years for sexual assault

(MENAFN- Jordan Times) The Criminal Court has sentenced a 22-year-old barber to 20 years in prison for sexually assaulting a teenage girl in November 2011. The court first sentenced the defendant to a 15-year prison term after convicting him of drugging and sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl on November 22. But the tribunal decided to increase the sentence to 20 years because the victim was a virgin at the time of the assault. Court papers said the defendant and the victim were engaged in a love affair three years before the incident. On the day of the incident, the court added, the defendant took the girl to his brother's house, gave her a sleeping pill and informed her that it was a tranquiliser. "When the victim woke up she found herself naked and discovered that she had been sexually assaulted," the six-page verdict said. The defendant told the teenager that "he wanted her to be his wife and forced her to stay at his brother's house, which was empty, for four days, but she eventually managed to escape and informed her mother", the court document added. "The defendant had pled not guilty to the charges during his opening trial. The tribunal comprised judges Fawzi Nahar, Hazem Saeed and Hussein Tharabaa. The Cassation Court has begun reviewing the verdict, which was issued at the end of June.
