Oman- NRNA welcomes ban on young housemaids

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Nepal's decision to ban housemaids under-30 from working in the Gulf, has been welcomed by the Nepali community in Oman. Following reports of physical and verbal abuse of the maids, the Nepal government recently imposed the ban.

Speaking about the issue, D B Chhetri, the president of Non Residential Nepali Association (NRNA), said, ''The decision by the Nepal government to ban women below 30 years to work as housemaids is a very good move, particularly for Oman.''

''But we are pressurising the government and expect that soon we will have one. An embassy is necessary for us here not only to act as a guardian but also to process several documents.''

According to Chhetri, absence of an embassy has also promoted illegal migration of housemaids. ''We are optimistic that this move will help us check the illegal entry of these women.''

Over the last few months, the organisation has rescued more than 15 housemaids from across the country.

Most of them had fled their sponsors' resid
