Jordan- US warns nationals of Tawjihi festive shooting

(MENAFN- Jordan Times) The US embassy in Jordan on Wednesday issued a statement warning US nationals in the Kingdom of Tawjihi result celebrations on Friday. The results of the General Secondary Education Certificate exams will be released at 8:30pm on Friday. "Families throughout Jordan often celebrate when the results are announced and, for some, the celebration is exuberant," the embassy statement said. "Groups of young adults typically drive around in cars blowing horns, sometimes congesting traffic. This is sometimes accompanied by celebratory gunfire," it added. The embassy urged US citizens in Jordan to enrol in the "Smart Traveller Enrolment Programme (STEP)" to make it "easier for the embassy to contact them in case of emergency". Meanwhile, Education Minister Fayez Saudi on Tuesday said the results of the Tawjihi summer session were better than in the previous session. During an event organised by the Jordan Press Association on Tuesday evening, he added that the results will be announced starting 8:30pm on Friday via SMS, noting that 95 per cent of Tawjihi students have provided the ministry with their mobile phone numbers to receive the results. Saudi said a press conference would be held at 9:00pm on Friday to announce the details of the results. Saudi also highlighted plans to open private schools inside Syrian refugees camps to provide education for students.
