Jordan- Library department seizes 15,000 pirated CDs and DVDs

(MENAFN- Jordan Times) The National Library Department (NLD) on Tuesday seized more than 15,000 pirated DVDs and CDs in Amman's Sweifieh area. The haul of pirated goods, one of the largest since 2000, included movies, music, games and other software, NLD Director General Mohammad Abbadi told The Jordan Times on Tuesday. "We received information about a store selling pirated DVDs in the area and our teams raided the store and discovered that it not only sold them but also had a machine for copying them," Abbadi said. "The department confiscated all the pirated items and the machine, and closed the store," he added. The department has fined the store owners and all individuals involved in the case will be referred to court. The NLD director said the department will continue its campaigns across the country during Ramadan to detect any violations of intellectual property rights (IPR). "Our teams conduct daily raids after iftar because sales of such DVDs rise in Ramadan," he said. According to the NLD, the top authority concerned with intellectual property, 4,000 IPR cases have been referred to the courts since 2000. The Jordanian Copyright Law stipulates that it is a crime to download software, music or movies that are protected under the legislation. Offenders face a prison sentence of between three months and three years and a fine ranging from JD1,000 to JD6,000.
