Jordan- No flexibility on food safety

(MENAFN- Jordan Times) Prime Minister Fayez Tarawneh on Sunday said the government supported the Jordan Food and Drug Administration's (JFDA) decision to close several restaurants and food outlets found in violation of public health and safety regulations. During a visit to the administration, Tarawneh stressed that citizens' safety is a priority for Jordan and urged the JFDA to continue its regular inspections of restaurants, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. "The campaign carried out by the administration is very important and the law should apply to all," Tarawneh said during a meeting with JFDA Director General Hayel Obeidat, Health Minister Abdul Latif Wreikat and Abdul Halim Kilani, head of the Greater Amman Municipality's committee. The premier added that there can be no flexibility when it comes to food and drug safety, and that the administration must not allow anyone to pressure it into overlooking violations through wasta (favouritism) or intimidation, Petra reported. He also called for unifying inspection efforts. JFDA inspectors closed 11 eateries, restaurants and butcher shops in downtown Amman over the course of less than three hours on Saturday morning. They also sealed two restaurants in Jabal Hussein with red wax. On Friday, a restaurant was closed in Irbid and warnings were issued to three others. Earlier this month, the administration closed down several well-known eateries and food outlets for violating safety regulations. Among these were a well-known shawerma restaurant, two sweets shops, a bakery and a juice outlet in downtown Amman. The administration also destroyed 1.5 tonnes of meat and more than 1,600 litres of juice, in which unapproved colours were used, during the last couple of days and withdrew licences for selling meat and chicken from three supermarkets located in shopping malls.
