(MENAFN- Jordan Times) The recent closure of several restaurants dominated Jordanians' tweets over the weekend, followed by the alleged clashes at the Syrian-Jordanian border, and the Kingdom's participation in the 2012 Olympics.
Seriously or jokingly, Jordanians commented about local or international events on the social media site, Twitter, making for entertaining reading on a slow Friday.
"After the closure of several famous restaurants in Jordan, it is better and safer to eat falafel," Ahmad Zeidan tweeted.
Another Twitter user, Muneera, cracked jokes about the closures and posted news links on the subject.
Mohammad Al Morshed also posted several news items related to the issue, and questioned the timing of these actions.
"Why Now? And would officials in Jordan dare to do?" he tweeted
Some Twitter users wondered why media outlets did not announce the list of establishments that were closed by the authorities, while others tweeted the importance of not spreading rumours about restaurants as only "a few were closed."
A few labelled the closures as the "Restaurants Spring in Jordan" in reference to the so-called Arab Spring.
By the end of June 2012, there were 59,726 active Twitter users in Jordan, according to the recently released Arab Social Media Report.
The report showed that Twitter penetration in Jordan stood at 0.92 per cent by the end of June.
Tens of Jordanians also tweeted about the alleged clashes on Friday at the Jordanian-Syrian border, with many posting reports by local and regional news portals.
"The security and safety of Jordan is our asset. God protects Jordan," one Twitter user said.
"May Allah protect Jordan and all the support for our army," another tweeted over the weekend.
Many tweets referred to the Syrian boy who was shot dead by Syrian troops Friday as he attempted to flee with his family into Jordan.
Twitter users also slammed a group of Jordanians who recently sent a cable to Syrian President Bashar Assad, offering condolences over the killing of several top security officials during a recent bombing in Damascus.
In addition, dozens of Jordanians and foreigners tweeted about Jordan's participation in the London Olympics, with a majority of them commending the Jordanian team members who wore traditional attire during the opening ceremony.
