Algeria Steps Up Security of Oil Fields

(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Algerian authorities stepped up security measures near oil and gas fields located in the southern state of Al Agwat, as well as intensifying desert combing operations in the area, in anticipation of a potential "terrorist attack". Algerian newspaper Al-Shurooq said on Tuesday said that members of security forces reinforced control points near oil companies in the gas hub of Hasi al Raml as well as intensifying operations near the second most important industrial zone in Algeria. The newspaper noted that this process is supervised by the leadership of the 4th military district of the Algerian army. The moves come after a suicide attack in June targeted the headquarters of the Regional National Gendarmerie in the state of Ouargla. One person was killed and three were wounded in the attack last month, which was claimed by The Movement for Oneness and Jihad in West Africa (MUJAO), a Mali-based Islamist group.
