(MENAFN - Jordan Times) A study conducted by the Consumer Protection Society (CPS) on the prices of 96 food items before Ramadan and after the holy month began revealed an increase in the prices of 23 food items (19.7 per cent) while the prices of another 73 items remained unchanged.

The prices of fresh meat and vegetables rose while the prices of items such as rice, tea, sugar and dairy products remained the same.

The CPS field study included a comparison of foodstuff prices one week before Ramadan with those recorded during the first week of the holy month.

In light of the results, CPS President Mohammad Obeidat called on the government and all concerned bodies to intervene and curb the rise of prices.

It denounced the recent increase in the prices of meat and most vegetables, claiming that there was no valid reason behind the increase.
