PM: Jordan is not under pressure on Syria 

(MENAFN - Jordan Times) Prime Minister Fayez Tarawneh on Wednesday stressed that there are no countries or any other parties exercising pressures on Jordan to take "certain stands on Syria".

He told the local satellite station, Roya TV, that even if any party tried to pressure Amman, the Kingdom will only take "sovereign decisions" and do "what is right".

Speaking to "Nabd Al Balad" (Pulse of the Country) talk show, the premier said that his statements in Prague two days earlier came "in the context of the Jordanian position calling for stopping the bloodshed" in the northern neighbour.

"I did not call for invading Syria or using force. I just said that the [UN] Security Council as the umbrella of international legitimacy can impose ceasefire as prelude to finding solutions to the crisis."

Tarawneh said during a visit to the Czech Republic that dialogue was no longer a feasible solution to the crisis in the neighbouring country. Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh clarified on Tuesday that the premier was not calling for a military solution.

Commenting on a suicide attack at the national security headquarters in Damascus, which killed three top security and defence officials, Tarawneh told the station that the development was the most significant in the 16-month conflict in Syria.

He said that all arrangements were in place to protect the northern border of Jordan, especially "after events took a serious turn in the past month, with the aggravation of the [Syrian] refugees issue", referring to around 140,000 Syrians who fled the violence back home and arrived in Jordan.
