(MENAFN - Jordan Times) Residents of Jordan's northern villages say the sounds of explosions and shelling by Syrian regime forces in towns across the border are now audible on a daily basis.
Some residents even complained in remarks to The Jordan Times that heavy explosions sometimes shook their houses.
"Recently, we hear gunfire and shelling every night. We can't even sleep because of the heavy explosions," said Bilal Darabseh, a university student from the village of Torrah in Ramtha District, 90 kilometres north of Amman.
Darabseh added that on Saturday, sounds of explosions were "very loud" due to heavy shelling in the southern Syrian city of Daraa, which is just across the border from Ramtha.
"Our house was shaking," he said.
Ibrahim Darabseh, also from Torrah, noted that residents sometimes see fires and smoke caused by the shelling of Daraa.
Another Torrah resident, Ahmad Irsheidat, mentioned that they can also see the shelling from a hilly area in the village that overlooks towns inside Syria.
"Torrah is just few kilometres from Daraa, so we hear sounds of explosions every night," Irsheidat said.
Mohammad Hamadneh, from the village of Aqraba, noted that some residents stay awake all night listening "with pain" to the sounds of shelling in nearby Syrian towns.
Aqraba, to the north of Irbid, overlooks the Yarmouk River, which separates the village from towns in the Horan plains that extend from southern Syria to the north of Jordan.
According to Hamadneh, his home village overlooks Tafas and Shajarah in Syria.
"People here are angry about what [Syrian President] Bashar Assad is doing to his own people," he said, adding that when residents hear explosions, they automatically start cursing Assad and his regime.
Idris Obeidat said that inhabitants of his hometown, Al Rafid, have also been hearing loud explosions almost every night.
"The sounds of explosions are usually heard after midnight," he said.
