Jordan- Dahabi bail petition rejected on appeal

(MENAFN- Jordan Times) The Court of Appeal on Tuesday turned down a bail petition submitted by the defence team of former General Intelligence Department (GID) chief Mohammed Dahabi, according to a judicial source. The court upheld the ruling of the Criminal Court, which rejected Dahabi's 16th bail plea on Sunday, the source added. The defence team appealed the decision on Monday. Accordingly, Dahabi will remain in detention until his trial resumes in early September after the judicial holiday, according to the source. Dahabi, who headed the GID between 2005 and 2008, is standing trial on several corruption-related charges. He has pleaded not guilty to charges of embezzlement, money laundering and exploitation of public office. Prior to his arrest in February, the prosecution banned him from travelling and his assets were frozen after the Anti-Money Laundering Unit filed a motion against him. The criminal court heard 35 prosecution witnesses over the past few weeks before it adjourned the trial to September 4, giving the defence time to prepare their case.
