Jordan- Heatwave to accompany onset of Ramadan

(MENAFN- Jordan Times) The Kingdom will be affected by a heatwave starting Tuesday, forecast to bring very hot and dry weather and push temperatures above 40ºC, the Jordan Meteorological Department (JMD) said on Monday. The heatwave will be caused by a seasonal hot air mass affecting the Arabian Peninsula, accompanied by hot and dry northeasterly to northwesterly winds, meteorologist Hassan Shanaa said. "The heatwave will peak on Wednesday and Thursday, when temperatures will reach a high of 40ºC and 41ºC in Amman and above 45ºC in the eastern region, the Jordan Valley and Aqaba," Shanaa told The Jordan Times over the phone. Mercury levels during the heatwave are expected to be 8-10 degrees above their annual average of 32ºC during this time of the year, the meteorologist noted. "The heatwave is expected to continue until Sunday, and the weather will remain hot but temperatures will drop slightly starting Friday," Shanaa said. The JMD warned the public against exposure to sunlight during the heatwave, especially around noon, to avoid sun strokes. Maximum temperatures on Friday and Saturday will reach 39ºC and 38ºC, dropping to around 37ºC on Sunday, according to Shanaa, who said temperatures are expected to rise again next Monday by 1-2 degrees. "Nighttime temperatures during the heatwave will be around 28ºC in Amman, which is nine degrees above the annual average, and exceed 30ºC in the south, east and the Jordan Valley," he noted. A major electric appliances outlet on Monday reported a rise in demand for air conditioners and fans ahead of the expected heatwave. "Demand increases for fans and air conditioning systems every summer, but this week we are recording higher demand than before. All of our air conditioning units have been sold and we are waiting for new shipments," Hadi Suleiman, marketing officer at the electric appliances outlet, told The Jordan Times. He attributed the rise to the expected heatwave, which also coincides with the first days of the holy month of Ramadan, which is expected to start on Friday or Saturday, depending on the sighting of the crescent.
